How to Handle a Storm

Scripture:

Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"

He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm (Matthew 8: 23-26, NLT)

After an eventful day of teaching, Jesus and his disciples set out to cross the Sea of Galilee. But as they crossed the peaceful body of water, it was quickly transformed by a violent storm, stirring the water into violent twenty-foot waves. Neither Jesus nor the disciples had foolishly set out in this storm; they were caught by surprise, and their danger was great.

Life can be like the Sea of Galilee. You start your day off and all is calm. Then something unexpectedly happens. You visit the doctor for a routine checkup but receive bad news; you drive your normal route to work, but get hit by a drunk driver; you send your children off to school, but get a call later one of them is ill; you arrive at your office to put in a full day's work but are advised you no longer have a job. You didn't begin the day expecting anything unusual to happen - but suddenly and without any warning, you find yourself caught up in a storm.

How are we to handle the storms that arise unexpectedly in our lives. Jesus reminds us through his disciples of three things:

*Don't panic (v 25).
*Hold on to your faith in God (v 26a).
*Remember who has the power to calm the storm (v26b) .

We can't control the storms that will arise in our lives. But we can control how we handle our life storms. If we choose not to panic, hold on to our faith and remember who has the power to calm our raging storms, we can make it safely through to the other side to find peace once again.

Sharing the word,
