Scripture:
I have glorifed you on earth. I have finished the work which you gave me to do.
John 17:4, NLT
It was an early Sunday morning and I was still asleep when the phone rang. When I answered hello, I heard my sister say, "Mom's gone. She passed away this morning."
For weeks, my mother had been in ICU recovering from a brain hemorrhage. But now she was gone. As I dressed to make the trip to the hospital, I wondered, between tears, "Why God? Why did my mother have to die so soon?"
In my eyes, it seemed the life of my mother was short-lived when she died several years ago at the age of fifty-two. But in the book, The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren states: "'it's not our duration, but our donation that counts; it's not how long we live, but how we live, that matters most to God." As I reflect on the donation my mother made during her time her on earth and the legacy she left behind in her seven children, I find comfort in knowing she completed the work God gave her to do.
God has given each of us another opportunity in 2010 to complete the work he has given us to do. As you ponder the donation he wants you to make this year, I pray you'll live with such passion and purpose that\ when this year closes you'll be able to say:
Mission accomplished!
Happy new year!
