Developing Your Character

Scripture:

When your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in chracter and ready for anything,
(James 1:3-5, NLT)

I am reading a book on how to develop character traits in my children. It discusses how I can shape their character by teaching them important traits like honesty, patience, kindness, compassion and courage. The book challenges me to make a list of the character traits I want to develop in my children and to pick one specific behavior to work on each week. It also gives me suggestions on how to develop the character traits I have chosen.

Like a good parent, God also desires to build character traits in his children. And he has a list of traits that he wants to develop in us which can be found in his Word (Galatians 5:22, 23, NLT). Character traits like love, kindness, gentleness, patience and self-control are some of the things he desires to see in us. And although we may not always like the methods he uses to develop our character, the Bible reminds us that his purpose for each and every method is not to harm us, but to mature us into the Christians he wants us to become (James 1:3-5).

So don't be surprised when various trials come your way - just consider it character development!

Sharing the Word,

Jeaninne
